Chapter Ninety-One: Rescuing Ke Bei
“Hm, what’s wrong with me? It feels like every bone in my body is about to be crushed.” Fang Yuan could clearly sense the excitement in the Insect’s voice, but he was in no mood to argue with it right now; otherwise, he would have gone on a hunger strike for a whole day.
“Fang Yuan, you’re finally awake!” It was Li Fu speaking, his face lighting up with genuine happiness as he noticed Fang Yuan’s furrowed brow.
“What happened to me? Why am I here?” At the sound of Li Fu’s voice, Fang Yuan immediately sat up.
Surveying his surroundings and smelling the lingering scent of disinfectant in the air, Fang Yuan didn’t need to guess—he was in a hospital.
“Fang Yuan, do you still recognize me? Do you know my name?” Now that Fang Yuan was awake, Li Fu knew better than to celebrate too soon.
“Li Fu, I’m perfectly fine, all right? Stop testing me. There’s nothing wrong with my head.” Fang Yuan understood why Li Fu was asking; he wanted to see if Fang Yuan had lost his memory.
But as Fang Yuan thought carefully, he only remembered being in the sea, his body out of control, tossed about endlessly, and finally, performing a series of difficult forward rolls in the water.
He couldn’t recall how many times he had somersaulted; the next time he opened his eyes, it was already now.
“You’re really all right? That’s a relief, truly a relief.” Li Fu was so overjoyed at Fang Yuan’s certainty that those nearby might have mistaken their relationship for something exceptionally close.
“Fang Yuan, how are you feeling now? If you’re all right, can you tell me what happened down there?” Li Fu, unable to suppress his curiosity, asked in a low voice.
Strictly speaking, the moment Fang Yuan woke up, Li Fu should have notified the attending physician. But his curiosity got the better of him; once he confirmed Fang Yuan was fine, he didn’t call for the doctor or nurse.
“What happened? What do you mean?” Seeing Li Fu’s eager expression, Fang Yuan almost wished he hadn’t woken up.
“I mean what happened underwater with that huge monster,” Li Fu pressed.
“Oh, right, Kobe…” Hearing Li Fu mention that colossal creature, Fang Yuan suddenly recalled that before he lost consciousness, he’d killed something that had poked its head out from a hole.
That thing was covered in barbs, something Fang Yuan hadn’t noticed at the time. But now, as he stretched out his hand, he could clearly see a cluster of tiny wounds, each about the size of a grain of rice.
“Fang Yuan, you’re finally awake!” Just then, a sly-looking man slipped in behind Li Fu. Who else could it be but Kobe, the very person Fang Yuan had been searching for?
“Kobe, you…” Seeing Kobe standing before him unscathed, Fang Yuan wondered how he’d managed to escape.
“Fang Yuan, you really don’t remember anything? Li Fu, call the doctor right away—maybe there’s something wrong with his brain!” Kobe’s face instantly turned anxious the moment he realized Fang Yuan didn’t remember what had happened. Kobe had always been arrogant, never truly respecting anyone. Even Li Mingbo was nothing special in Kobe’s eyes.
But Fang Yuan, in Kobe’s estimation, was practically godlike. If anything happened to Fang Yuan, Kobe would be the one most upset.
It’s said that a kindred spirit is hard to find—Kobe had finally met someone he could genuinely admire, and it had happened almost without his realizing it.
“No need, my brain is perfectly fine.” Seeing Kobe about to call for a doctor, Fang Yuan hurried to stop him. “My head’s all right. I remember everything before I lost consciousness, but after that—well, I was unconscious. How could I remember what happened? So, tell me, how did you get out?”
Fang Yuan’s tone was casual, treating Kobe simply as an ordinary friend.
Though it was Li Fu’s first time meeting Kobe, he’d heard plenty about him—his vengeful nature and notorious arrogance. Typically, he looked down his nose at everyone.
Now, seeing Fang Yuan speak to Kobe in such a commanding tone, Li Fu stood by, ready to enjoy the spectacle.
“Fang Yuan, you really don’t remember what happened?” Kobe, rather than getting angry, became even more animated. At this moment, he looked every bit like Fang Yuan’s devoted sidekick.
In fact, Kobe had been in the room for some time. Li Fu had been waiting for Fang Yuan to wake so he could learn exactly what had transpired. But no matter how long he waited, Fang Yuan didn’t wake up. Overcome by curiosity, Li Fu tried to coax the story out of Kobe.
But Kobe didn’t know Li Fu, and even if he had, he wouldn’t have talked without truly accepting him. Despite Li Fu’s persistent cajoling and all sorts of offers, Kobe didn’t say a single word, rewarding Li Fu only with cold stares.
Now that Fang Yuan wanted to know what had happened, Kobe, eager for Fang Yuan’s approval, began to tell his tale with great enthusiasm, as if no one else existed.
It turned out that on the day Kobe went looking for Fang Yuan, he arrived at the factory just in time to see a group of people driving away. According to Kobe, the buildings were still intact at that point, which meant someone had come later to clean things up.
After the group left, Kobe scaled the high wall, discovering Fang Yuan wasn’t inside. Suspecting those people had taken him, Kobe followed their tracks.
Kobe’s tracking skills were extraordinary. Though the others had a car and he was on foot, he managed not to lose them.
He followed the trail all the way to the shore, where the tracks vanished. Quick-witted as ever, Kobe immediately deduced they must have left by boat. His judgment was spot on.
As Kobe approached the water, searching for signs of recently departed fishing boats, he suddenly felt an immense threat from behind.
Before he could turn and see what it was, he was struck hard from behind.
Damn it, did these people have a particular fondness for clubbing others from behind?
