Chapter 87: On the Verge of Breaking?
What’s going on?! How did things develop like this?
The plot is drifting further into unspeakable territory...
As expected of you, Jiu Cilang, you always manage to unearth unexpected “benefits” in a horror escape storyline.
But seriously, what’s with the young wife? Why has her attitude changed so drastically, as if she’s a different person?
Is it intermittent amnesia?
Could the woman in the office earlier have been a player in disguise, like Yu the Overachiever?
I think there might be two young wives who just look alike...
I can’t believe you all still have the energy to discuss such serious questions. Wife, blond, home invasion, discipline... even my study folder’s archive doesn’t have such a complete set of elements.
Honestly, if I still had a body and not just thoughts, my pants would be off by now.
But I really care about this! Isn’t there any expert who can explain? I’ve been a spectator for so many years, watched countless streams, but I’ve never encountered such a situation. Are there really two identical young wives in the same instance? Isn’t that weird? Is it a bug? It’s one thing if the background NPCs have bugs, but even the female ghost has a bug? That’s impossible, right? The most impressive thing about this game is the perfection of the female ghost boss’s design; how could something like this happen?
...
Regarding Li Shuyi’s situation, at first, Wen Nan suspected it might be similar to Yu Shujun’s case—perhaps one of the two women, either the one in the president’s office or the one now standing before him, was actually a player disguised as the young wife.
But he quickly dismissed this idea.
For a player to disguise themselves as an NPC, the first step would be to destroy or remove the original character. Wen Nan had seen items in the shop that allowed players to disguise themselves as roles—only top players above the gold rank could purchase them. In other words, if a player could pull off such a disguise, eliminating a low-level instance’s role character would be a piece of cake.
If that were the case, and a high-level player had infiltrated this scenario, there’s no way both the real and the impostor characters would appear on the map at the same time. That would be too obvious.
Then there was another possibility—there were simply two young wives who looked alike.
But this, too, was ruled out the moment Wen Nan stepped into the young wife’s home.
At the entrance, the shoe cabinet held a brand-new pair of men’s slippers prepared in advance, and a seven-inch birthday cake sat in the fridge. It was clear she had planned for Wen Nan’s visit to celebrate his birthday.
So why was she now acting as if she remembered nothing? Was it truly intermittent amnesia, or was she lying on purpose, trying to play out some strange scenario?
All these guesses were eliminated as soon as Wen Nan used the system to scan and obtain a second version of the character’s profile.
If it were actual amnesia or a deliberate lie, there shouldn’t be two different versions of the character introduction.
After carefully comparing both profiles and observing the young wife’s expressions and behavior, Wen Nan confirmed his suspicion.
There was only one truth—
The Li Shuyi in the office that morning and the Li Shuyi at home now were the same person, just two sides of her—two different souls within one body.
Wen Nan wasn’t sure what to call this when it happened to a role in a game instance—splitting? Mutation? Duplication?
But in psychiatric circles, this phenomenon had a fixed name—Dissociative Identity Disorder.
Or more simply, dual personality.
Why did dual personalities appear, and how long had this been going on?
Both questions were answered in Li Shuyi’s character profiles.
The divergence in her background began three years ago, when her husband died in a car accident. The second profile stated clearly that, upon arriving at the scene, Li Shuyi held her husband’s corpse and wept until she fainted, feeling as if she had died herself.
It must have been at that moment that a second personality split off—the one Wen Nan met in the office that morning.
Since then, the primary personality, Li Shuyi, remained trapped in memories of her husband, unable to extricate herself from pain. The secondary personality, though equally lonely and bored, was no longer bound by the past and instead chose to drown her sorrows in bars, seeking pleasure in life.
Each personality had its own way of coping, and Wen Nan had no right to judge.
But what he could be certain of was that, to win over Li Shuyi, he had to draw out the secondary personality—the one from the office.
First, the secondary personality obviously liked Wen Nan, while the primary personality resisted his approach. From a strategy standpoint, it was clearly more advantageous to interact with the secondary one.
Second, the main quest’s clue—the location of the “g-spot”—was known only by the secondary personality. The primary personality had no idea and could not provide the answer.
Thus, Wen Nan took the current step—
He cornered Li Shuyi’s primary personality at the edge of the bed, forcing her, in her extreme shame and anger, to retreat and allow the secondary personality to emerge.
He believed she would want to escape in her humiliation because of what had happened in the living room earlier.
When Wen Nan asked about the “g-spot,” she, unaware of the hidden plot, thought he was teasing her and became flustered and angry. At that moment, her body trembled abnormally, and her pupils quivered—clear signs of a personality switch. Wen Nan recognized these as obvious indicators.
But after waiting a while, he noticed the primary personality ultimately prevailed, and the secondary one didn’t surface.
Afterward, Li Shuyi’s primary personality directly ordered him to leave and returned alone to her bedroom.
So Wen Nan decided to take a more aggressive approach and stimulate her even further to force the primary personality to retreat and let the secondary one out.
Sure enough, after he spoke, Li Shuyi’s body trembled again.
Her eyes reddened, and she clutched her late husband’s clothes tightly, trying to escape Wen Nan’s hold but failing. At last, her voice quivered with helplessness as she said, “Mr. Ye, please don’t…”
Naturally, Wen Nan ignored her plea and moved a step closer.
He leaned forward, his lips lightly brushing her soft earlobe, his hot breath caressing her auricle, feeling her body’s obvious shudder.
She must be at her limit, Wen Nan thought.
But then...
