Chapter Ten: I Am Quite Fond of This Job

From start to finish, Qi Chen had sat obediently on the bench, but when he heard the words “Eerie Walker,” his eyes suddenly gleamed with a different light.

It sounded extraordinary!

To be honest, his first week in this world had been filled with anxiety. The towering Mistbreak Spire in the center of the city alone made him realize that this world was far from simple.

During his days wandering the streets, he heard countless strange rumors, and as someone without proper identification, he’d often worried about how long he could survive in this shrouded world.

Why else would he be so desperate for a stable job?

He wanted to find a place for himself in this world—a spot where he could finally set his heart at ease.

Now, although he had the additional burden of a domineering, opera-singing presence occasionally shouting in his ear, there seemed to be a new hope glimmering in his days.

While Qi Chen pondered, Fu Ying continued to observe the man before her. In all her extensive experience, she’d rarely encountered a target like him.

The more they used their powers, the more the eerie would subtly influence their thoughts and personalities. Most Walkers, after wielding their powers long enough, would undergo marked changes—becoming the opposite of their former selves, amplifying their old tendencies, or even manifesting entirely new personalities.

Where they ended up depended on their particular eerie.

But in Fu Ying’s eyes, Qi Chen seemed perfectly ordinary. The Intelligence Department’s reports on his past week of life corroborated this.

Yet the testimony from Huang Xu, the surviving security guard, painted Qi Chen in a different light.

“If he isn’t an Eerie Walker, there’s no way he could have escaped an eerie’s grasp... let alone saved someone and dispatched an E+ class eerie in passing.”

Fu Ying reaffirmed her earlier suspicions and rapped her knuckles on the table, drawing Qi Chen’s attention.

“We are very sincere, Mr. Qi.

“I can show you the report from the Hongfeng Building at any time. We are quite certain you’re an Eerie Walker.”

Fu Ying’s directness left Qi Chen a little flustered. He’d expected more probing, which would have given him time to think things through. Instead, she laid everything bare.

“As I understand it, you’re currently worried about finding work, am I right?

“Our department would suit you very well.” Fu Ying suddenly stood, her gaze blazing. “A capable Eerie Walker is invaluable to every city in the Alliance, and you have that potential!

“Right now, City No. 3 urgently needs Walkers like you!”

“Capable?” Qi Chen savored the word that so pleased him, feeling a little embarrassed, though he remained calm.

Did they expect him to risk his life for a few compliments? That was out of the question.

True, he now had his “Tyrant,” but it wasn’t hard to guess that Fu Ying’s department required long-term, high-intensity handling of such eerie incidents.

The dangers were obvious at a glance.

“If you join us, we’ll provide you with comprehensive training and an experienced partner.

“All food and lodging covered, a base monthly salary of ten thousand, and mission bonuses based on assignment level. What do you think?”

“I’m exactly in need of such a job!” Qi Chen sprang to his feet, staring at Fu Ying with utmost seriousness. “Director Fu! I really think this job suits me perfectly!”

He had intended to hesitate, maybe even negotiate the benefits, but Fu Ying’s offer had completely won him over.

What kind of deal was this?

It was beyond anything he’d ever dreamed of!

“A base salary of ten thousand—wouldn’t that be heaven? With food and lodging covered, I could save almost all my income! After a stint here, maybe I’d have enough to open a stall of my own!”

A bright future seemed within reach, and Qi Chen began to imagine the happy life he could have here.

In the observation room, the analysis team updated their assessment in real time.

“Although he briefly exhibited unusual irritability during the written test, overall, his controllability is very high.”

There were many reasons the Department for Eerie Incidents wanted to recruit Qi Chen. The Hongfeng Building report made it clear—anyone who could resolve an eerie incident unscathed right after awakening had immense potential.

But that wasn’t why Fu Ying had gone against convention with such an unorthodox recruitment method.

From the testimony of Huang Xu, the surviving guard, she’d seen in Qi Chen a quality that made this worthwhile—a quality that aligned with the values of City No. 3.

“Have you decided? If you want to join us, you can make the decision now.”

“Director Fu, do you mean I’ve passed all the assessments?” Qi Chen was incredulous. It felt unreal to be offered such a generous job before he’d even done anything.

“Then you accept,” Fu Ying said with her usual decisiveness. “Welcome to City No. 3, Qi Chen.”

Staring at the hand extended before him, Qi Chen paused for a heartbeat, then reached out and shook it firmly.

“It’s a great honor!”

The atmosphere instantly turned harmonious; there was no need for further discussion. In truth, Fu Ying had little reason to linger.

As the chief commander for all eerie incidents in the city, her daily duties were far from light.

“Qi Chen, from this moment, you are an intern with the Department for Supernatural and Eerie Incident Handling in City No. 3. Your benefits during the probation period will be slightly lower than what I just described, but you’ll never have to worry about your daily life again.

“Someone will take you to your quarters soon. In the meantime, study the documents and upcoming assignments given to you.”

As Fu Ying smoothly finished her instructions, Qi Chen realized this poised and formidable woman had set her sights on him from the beginning—but given the generous compensation, he didn’t mind at all.

And soon, in this unfamiliar city, he would have a home of his own!

He couldn’t be happier with this job.
