Chapter 95: Running Along the Eaves and Scaling the Walls
Flying Eaves Iron Hook, A-rank: a rather decent support tool. It could help you scale mountains and cliffs and travel over rooftops and walls with ease, while also serving as a weapon against prey. It was of little use against large prey, but for catching small game, it was a rare and excellent piece of equipment.
Yeda took out the iron hook and flung it straight onto the door frame.
Then he fastened the other end of the chain to his belt. With both hands covered in stone skin, he gripped the chain and slowly lowered himself inch by inch. It had to be said that this Flying Eaves Iron Hook was astonishingly useful.
It could extend and retract on its own. With nothing more than a single thought, he could let out a length of chain.
With another thought, he could draw it back up.
It was as convenient as Spider-Man’s web.
“Wooo!”
“Wooo-ooo!”
Below him, a pack of corpse wolves saw a person slowly descending from the sky and immediately gathered beneath him, letting out eerie howls.
In their eyes, he was an intruder.
And not just any intruder, but a living, breathing feast of flesh and blood.
Though corpse wolves were undead beings, they were still like zombies in one respect: they needed food to sustain their activity, and their food was naturally living creatures.
Humans, beasts, anything alive, they would eat it all.
“Wah!”
“Wah-wah-wah!”
The cries of the corpse wolves were strange.
Like a bark forced through a broken bellows, they came out in ragged, leaking bursts. Ugly and shrill.
Yeda suspected their vocal cords had probably rotted away, which was why they made such a bizarre sound.
He turned his head to look down over the edge of the cliff.
What he wanted to see was how far he still was from the bottom.
At that moment, a pack of corpse wolves, drooling with hunger, had gathered beneath him.
They were all waiting for the food to drop within reach. Then they would leap up, tear it apart, and devour Yeda as their delicious meal.
“Heh.”
Yeda looked at the greedy, drooling pack below and gave a cold laugh.
“You think I’m going to come down and fight you head-on? Get torn apart by you, then be divided up and eaten?”
“You’re wrong.”
“Here, I’m the hunter.”
Click.
Yeda stopped the iron chain of the Flying Eaves Iron Hook at a point ten meters above the ground.
That was roughly the height of a three-story building.
It was a perfect height. Yeda could even see the mold spreading across the wolves’ skin, the fur peeling away in layers, and the stench of singed, rotten meat.
The smell of decaying flesh stabbed into his nostrils, making his stomach churn.
But this height was also just beyond the corpse wolves’ reach.
Of course, he could have lowered himself a little more, to a height of seven or eight meters, which the wolves probably still couldn’t touch.
But considering that these corpse wolves were second-tier beings, who knew how high they could jump?
If even one or two among the pack had been gifted with unusual talent...
Yeda decided it was better not to take the risk.
So he kept the distance between them at ten meters. It was absolutely safe, and also the ideal range for his attack.
Because he was close enough, his accuracy would increase dramatically.
And because he was close enough, the corpse wolves would have no time to react, which would make his hit rate soar as well.
“Wah!”
“Wah-wah!!”
Seeing the food that had been slowly descending suddenly stop in midair, the corpse wolf pack became furious and barked in rage.
One or two even sprang upward in unwilling frustration.
Alas...
Their leap barely reached five meters, less than half the distance to Yeda’s position. They could not bite him at all.
That only made them even more restless.
Swish, swish.
Once he reached the proper position, Yeda let go with both hands and allowed the Flying Eaves Iron Hook to suspend him in midair. At that moment, he looked like a celestial immortal hanging from a wire.
The cold wind blew, and he swayed back and forth.
Yeda was shaken a little dizzy.
But he simply took a deep breath, steadied his body, and conjured a spirit bow and stone arrows.
He narrowed his eyes and aimed at the nearest corpse wolf.
This corpse wolf had a pair of murky eyes. Its pupils had already dilated, and its whites were filled with all sorts of gray-brown matter, like the eyes of a fish that had been dead for a long time.
That air of death was enough to make anyone feel a chill just by staring at it too long.
Once he was certain he had lined up the shot on the wolf’s eye, Yeda released the bowstring. The stone arrow shot forth with a piercing whistle.
“Wooo—”
The corpse wolf sensed danger and quickly barked, trying to flee.
But Yeda’s arrow was simply too fast.
At such a distance, only ten meters, the wolf had no reaction time whatsoever. Its murky eyeball was blown apart at once.
Crack.
The bark was cut off halfway.
Then the wolf crashed to the ground and transformed into two glowing orbs.
A rotten heart, and a beast core.
As expected...
A thing like this had no meat left, and even the pelt was no longer worth taking.
But when Yeda looked at the beast core among the glowing orbs and saw that it was a pale gray, he knew the energy within this corpse wolf’s core should not be too little.
When he had blasted apart the Gray Stone Spider earlier, he had discovered that the darker the color of the beast core, the more impurities it contained.
That meant the energy was less pure, and naturally the body could absorb less of it.
But this second-tier corpse wolf’s core was clearly a good thing.
“Wooo...”
The remaining corpse wolves saw that Yeda had effortlessly killed one of their own, and they all took a step back.
Their remaining intelligence was little, but the instinct to survive was carved into their bones.
Even after becoming corpses, they had not forgotten it.
“Hiding a step or two away won’t help,” Yeda said with a grin. “Have you never heard the saying that beyond seven steps, arrows are fast?”
“And within seven steps, they’re both fast and accurate!”
“Wah!”
One corpse wolf roared back in anger.
Yeda turned to look at the one that had answered him. It was a corpse wolf that had nearly rotted away entirely. He could even see the greenish ribs and hind leg bones beneath it.
Its innards had long since gone missing, and only maggots were burrowing through its fur.
Yet the wolf’s gaze was fiercely aggressive. It bared yellowed, blackened teeth and roared at Yeda in midair. Its hind legs, stripped of flesh and skin, bent slightly, like a leopard ready to explode into a charge at any moment.
Whoosh.
Seeing how earnestly it was putting on a performance, Yeda did not say a word and gave it a reward on the spot.
Prize: one stone arrow.
“Roar!”
The instant the corpse wolf saw the stone arrow streaking toward it, it thrust powerfully off the ground with its hind legs and shot toward Yeda like a bullet.
Its jumping power was terrifyingly strong.
It leaped six meters... seven meters... eight meters... nine meters...
It was about to reach Yeda’s height.
